Elections in Armenia: 2021 Early Parliamentary Elections
|
On Sunday, June 20, Armenian voters will go to the polls for early parliamentary elections. Last September, large-scale fighting erupted in Nagorno-Karabakh between the Armenian-backed defense forces of this disputed region and Azerbaijan. A cease-fire agreement was signed in November. Despite strong public support for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s reform agenda, the conflict galvanized the opposition. Following the prime minister’s resignation in April and two failed attempts to elect a new prime minister, Parliament was dissolved, and the president called for snap elections. |
