On Thursday 6 September ELDR member D66 and its youth wing Jonge Democraten supported the joint Free Pussy Riot action of Amnesty International, Lowlands festival and the 3FM radio station in The Hague, the Netherlands. More than 62.000 signatures of people demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the three Pussy Riot singers were offered to the Russian Ambassador. D66 parliamentary candidate Vera Bergkamp was amongst the protesters. She stated “D66 is the party for personal freedom. We are here to make a statement. The one thing that Pussy Riot has done wrong is having an opinion. The way we are standing here opposite the Russian Embassy could – in other countries-  lead to two years in a prison colony. Nothing is more important than personal freedom.”

Three musicians affiliated to D66 played outside the Embassy while the signatures were being offered to the Ambassador inside. Ilana Rooderkerk (a member of Jonge Democraten), together with Anne-Lotte (D66 member) and Erwin from Zero Sharp met each other when performing at the alternative songfestival “Douze points for Freedom”, asking attention for the human rights situation in Azerbaijan. This song festival was the initiative of D66 and organised together with e.g. VVD, Amnesty and Dutch gay rights organisation COC. For this festival Zero Sharp wrote a song about freedom of speech. This was one of the songs performed at the Free Pussy Riot action.
