Given that Ukraine’s most widely organised Christian church owes allegiance to the Patriarchate of Moscow, and given the frosty state of Ukrainian-Russian relations, many Ukrainians want an independent national church. If this is granted by the Ecumenical Patriarch in Istanbul, Moscow’s Patriarchate, ignoring the Reformation says it could lead to the biggest split in Christianity since the year 1054
