el Dalai Lama recibe la ciudadanía honoraria de Venecia

PRESS RELEASE

The Dalai Lama will be in Venice on Tuesday, February 10th following Marco Polo's footsteps. The Municipality offers the citizenship, the Regional Council the flag.

Once again, Venice bridges Europe and the East: On Tuesday 10th of February, his Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, will be in the lagoon city to participate in three different ceremonies in his honour. The salient moments of this day: a welcoming party at Palazzo Sant'Angelo with the Honorary Committee, the ordination of the honorary citizenship with Massimo Cacciari, mayor of Venice, and Renato Boraso, President of the Council, and the consignment of Veneto's official flag by Marino Finozzi, President of the Veneto Regional Council.

Marco Polo's birthplace has a special testimony to offer the Tibetan spiritual leader, in exile since 1959: in the historical Marciana library in San Marco's square (http://marciana.venezia.sbn.it) lie the famous Fra' Mauro globe (dating from 1460) and Marco Polo's testament. The renowned Venetian traveler already attests to the existence of "Tebet" as an autonomous State with its own language, currency and traditions in "Milione", written in the second half of the XIII century. This will be illustrated to His Holiness by Michele Bortoluzzi, member of the Honorary Committee.

"Tebet" is also represented as a Nation on the Fra' Mauro globe, a colourful and gold painting on parchment paper which will be presented to the Dalai Lama by Maria Letizia Sebastiani, Director of the Marciana Library. The globe is a real "summa" of geographical knowledge in the Middle Ages and is believed to have a Chinese globe, brought by Marco Polo, as one of its sources. The globe also includes some curious details: it is orientated with the South on the top, it has eight wind roses, and only three continents are represented, Europe, Africa and Asia.
