Countering Russian Influence in Europe and Eurasia

The Russian Federation has been using various tools and strategies to destabilize democratic or democratizing governments across Europe and Eurasia and encourage the rise of populist, anti-democratic regimes. Its efforts have accelerated in recent years and will likely continue to intensify.

A new white paper from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) examines how the Russian Federation is influencing countries to abandon or rethink their embrace of “western liberal values.” Countering Russian Influence in Europe and Eurasia then challenges democracies to recommit to democratic principles and institutions and to remain actively engaged in the region. The recommendations it outlines aim to mitigate electoral threats, build an active and rights-informed electorate, and support inclusion and equality.
